Global Warming And Weather

hurricane satellite view
From a post on global warming and changes in weather.

Warmer oceans mean more, and stronger, storms. Japan saw 10 typhoons last year - the previous record had been 7. For the first time, we saw a hurricane in the South Atlantic, as well as a record hurricane season. Storms are stronger and wetter - outside the bounds of history - including downpours like the one that flooded Mumbai recently.

George Bush: There When You Need Him

hurricane katrina george bush augsust 30 2005
Some skepticism about the White House response to a New York Times story on President Bush's response to Hurricane Katrina.

As Think Progress shows, Bush was closely monitoring the situation, if by “monitoring the situation” you mean playing guitar:

Chertoff: Yeah, We Screwed Up

hurricane katrina path noaa
Understatement of the Year Award.

Head honcho at Homeland Security, Michael Chertoff, admitted that they screwed up in front of a Senate panel today. This, of course, comes on the heels of the House report (Also, daily kos has some more commentary on the House report) that said how much everybody in the government - at all levels - screwed up.

Hurricane Insurance

hurricane damage florida coast
Seems like really expensive homes right on the shore where the winds hit hardest would be a good place to increase insurance rates. Oh, wait, that's where the biggest political donations come from.
Now, I hate to point out the obvious, but Florida sees a lot of hurricanes. And while I understand that the public needs to feel some sort of responsibility [read: control] over the insurance regulations in their state, if I were a Florida home or business owner, I’d expect to be paying a fair amount to insure my property. And, I’d probably expect that with eight hurricanes in two years, insurers would need to increase their rates to cover their risk or they’d go out of business. And then Florida home insurance would be akin to New Jersey auto insurance, it'd be a mess and Florida residents would be even more upset.

NOAA Censored Me

hurricane rita track
Seems a little hard to believe that NOAA would be censoring sites that discuss global warming, but not impossible.

The downside is knowing that government agents are attacking free speech. I don't make a thin dime off of this blog, not one penny, I don't even rattle a cup here, begging for money like many sites do, so there was zero reason for NOAA to attack this little blog, it wasn't like I was ripping them off, nay, I asked everyone to visit the various NOAA sites---they used to be very informative but now they ain't, a lot of the important information is...er...MISSING!

Almost Hurricane Season

hurricane trailer park
Not sure the whole trailer park concept for housing hurricane evacuees has worked out too well for anyone.

In a scant four months, hurricane season will be upon us once more. Those trailers are very vulnerable. The places that are used as shelters will not be able to handle the people from 40,000 trailers.

My Reaction To Carter And Lowery

hurricane katrina evacuees
One view on President Bush's response to Hurricane Katrina.

He then went on a rant about Hurricane Katrina as though it were the president’s fault all the people of color were not evacuated from New Orleans. President Bush does not hate blacks. He has given more opportunities in high places of government to blacks and Latinos than any other president in our history, bar none.
