Wedding Insurance
2004 was a very wet year for Western Pennsylvania. By September, we had already received an average year's worth of rain, and we still had the fall rainy season to go. The three rivers of Pittsburgh are fed by thousands of small tributaries, which normally pass under roadways with no problems. Early in September, the remnants of hurricane Frances added several more inches to the total, swelling the rivers and tributaries to near record levels. One week leter, Ivan's remnants dumped 5 inches in a matter of hours, causing streams and tunnels to flood, roadways to wach out, and entiresd towns to be evacuated. By the time it was all over, nearly 8000 homes were damaged or destroyed, along with 600 commercial buildings and 300 governmental buildings. Cleanup and recovery continues 9 months later.

Skiathos: Summer Holidays booked
Today, i finally booked my this year's summer holiday. My girlfriend and I are going to Skiathos. This is a beautiful small greek island with many awesome beaches. Last year, we already wanted to there but then we had a great offer to go to the Dominican Republic. There we experienced the Hurricane Jeanne which 'destroyed' a bit our holiday and which finished it earlier...

Wal-Mart War Rooms
So,…I began to work. This particular War Room was for Hurricane Charley. It was kinda neat, because I was at ground zero for Wal-Mart getting all of their stores up and running.

Buying Hurricane Frances
I bought the word, “Hurricane Frances” on a Sunday morning around 8:00 AM, then I went to church. Oh, I should add that I didn’t set a limit on the amount to spend because according to Google predicted clicks, it wouldn’t get hit all that often. This was mistake number two. You simply can’t trust Google’s predictation, especially when there are extenuating circumstances that could skew the numbers. Of course “Hurricane Frances” hadn’t been searched on before, there had never been one, but as I was about to find it, it would be searched on that day!

Tropical Storm Arlene, Hurricane Ivan Alike
Less than nine months after Hurricane Ivan ripped through the Florida Panhandle and Gulf Coast, Tropical Storm Arlene pummeled the same stretch of low lying shoreline Saturday, bringing 60 mph winds, drenching rains and the threat of tornadoes.

Tropical Storm Irene
Tropical Storm Irene is the opening act as the hurricane season prepares for a return tour of Florida. Since so many locals also have boats in Florida, we are developing a list of general marine related links for quick references on hurricane preparedness and storm centers.

Arlene Weakens
Tropical Storm Arlene weakened as it blew ashore Saturday on the Gulf Coast, but still packed enough punch that it brought sheets of rain, 20-foot waves and heavy wind to the same area that was devastated by Hurricane Ivan nine months ago.

Queer Eye For The Red Sox
It was all in good fun, and they raised money to repair a Florida little league field destroyed by Hurricane Charley. If you missed this, catch the rerun it is interesting to fans of the Fab Five and fans of the Red Sox; if you are neither, I am sure you will enjoy watching the CSI Pungo reruns.

Tropical Storm Arlene
Evenb thought weather.com does not show much in the way of precipitation for Sunday / Monday, I have bad feelings when reading about hurricane arlene. The rain is primarily located to the east of the hurricane, up to 12" in some spots. Have you looked at the apth of the hurricane? All path point to the west of North Carolina. I will be really really surpised if we don't see some significant rainfall from this storm. Weather.com is of course, reporting nothing. I hate weather.com!!!!
My vines are in pre to full bloom. Heavy rain during bloom is NOT a good thing.

The Florida Bureau of Manufactured Home and RV Construction tested nearly 12,000 homes in 77 communities, in seven of the counties that stood in the path of Hurricane Charley. All the homes had been built and installed according to 1999 code. In the study, the Bureau failed to uncover a single case in which a manufactured home was moved on its foundation.

Hurricane Season Is Here
Today is the official beginning of hurricane season. As usual, an active season is predicted. Hopefully, Louisiana is better prepared this time. Greater New Orleans actually had an evacuation plan in place last year when Hurricane Ivan was bearing down on her. I wouldnt say the plan was inadequate but its execution surely was. We're talking major traffic jams in every outbound direction but particularly the westbound I-10 towards Baton Rouge. It was taking up to 8 hours for some to make it from New Orleans to Baton Rouge, which normally takes...

Tax Holiday
Hurricane preparedness seems to be a growth industry this season. Even the state legislature has gotten into the act, approving a tax holiday on many hurricane supplies — batteries, small generators, candles and the like — from June 1 to June 12.

Hurricane In New York City?
Because of the population density, a successful evacuation of vulnerable low-lying areas in and around New York City and metropolitan New Jersey would actually have to start sooner than what is typically ordered in Florida and elsewhere, officials have determined based on studies by the Army Corps of Engineers.
But hurricanes move more quickly and become very difficult to predict when they head north of the Carolinas. In a likely scenario, experts say, there might only be hours of warning.
History reveals that New York and the Northeast have been hit hard before, and with little warning. Scientists say the next major hurricane to strike the city is a question of when, not if.
