High Insurance

hurricane isabel annapolis flood
Memories of Hurricane Isabel may help you save on home insurance.

Example 2: Hurricane Isabel hit Anne Arundel County, downtown Annapolis was flooded. Large portions of the county were flooded. Some of the properties sustained so much flood damage that they had to be destroyed and get rebuilt. Who paid for it? The insurance companies and the owners. When you go to buy some of those properties, the insurance rates will be very high.

Is It The Beginning?

hurricane katrina troops arrive
Justified homocide?

The stories MAY have more impact on me than many. I have two cousins in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, both in their early 40’s who are armed and hoping to avoid trouble by showing their presence, as well as their arms, in their homes. I fear for their safety. I pray that they won’t have to live through this horrible experience and then have to stand trial for murder. I regret that I feel if they killed someone in protecting home and hearth that it should be ruled justified and they be given a medal.

Hurricane Relief

hurricane katrina damage aerial
It's hard to understand what Hurricane Katrina has done to its victims.

I cannot imagine the hurt that the thousands (millions?) of people who’ve been directly impacted by hurricane Katrina are going through. Loss of home, loss of life, loss of everything that we humans cherish & hold on to… Everything that defines life for us, in a tangible sense, has been completely destroyed for them. I lost power for three and a half days after the remnants of hurricane Isabel poured through Virginia — nothing compared with the damage left in the wake of Katrina.

Always On Guard

hurricane isabel damage north carolina
If you've ever been through a hurricane like Hurricane Isabel, you take hurricane seriously.

Hurricanes are said to be the most destructive force of nature. We in the eastern United States know that power well. Now we are fortunate to have warnings before fury strikes. When Galveston was hit in the early 1900s and Long Island in the 1940s, with so many lives lost, people were going about their everyday affairs when devastration came. It has been almost two years since northern Virginia was visited by the fury and destruction of Hurricane Isabel, 19 September 2003. Our neighborhood weathered the storm quite well. However, my son’s neighborhood, which is nearer to the Potomac and Washington City was without power for more than a week. For a few days it was not even safe to drink tap water.

Underwater Hooters

hurricane isabel phildelphia
Meanwhile, up in Philadelphia, Hurricane Isabel continues to cause catastrophe.

It is a sad day indeed. The Hooters riverblight has apparently sunk. Really, it’s not there anymore.

Well, it started sinking back in September 2003 after hurricane Isabel tore through Philadelphia. And for almost two years, it sat closed, half-submerged and rotting, between Cavanaugh’s River Deck and Dave & Buster’s.

County Seeks Civilian Help In Disasters

hurricane isabel public response
The best disaster response includes training community members as well as public servants:

When Hurricane Isabel tore through Loudoun County in 2003, it wasn’t just sheriff’s deputies and firefighters who put together a response plan. County officials called on a trained corps of citizens to work at emergency shelters and help in the county’s emergency operations center. The civilians were graduates of the Community Emergency Response Team training course, a program established in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to enlist ordinary people to help their neighbors during emergencies.

Stumped

hurricane pear tree stump
I find a lot of posts about how long it takes to repair hurricane damage, but here's one at a very personal level: a pear tree stump.

The stump didn't move for a week. I dug. I chopped roots. I filled the trench around it with water. I made a hole so deep I could stand in it up to my thighs. It didn't move. The stump of the Bradford Pear toppled by hurricane Isabel seemed determined to outlast me. When the storm broke the tree in half I had actually thought through how I would get rid of the stump. Instead of chain sawing it off at the ground I'd left a good three feet of trunk to use as leverage. The piles of debris were all gone before I even thought about working on...

Can Pat Help?

Pat Robertson's plea didn't seem to help much.

Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson today prayed on his Christian Broadcasting Network, based here, that Hurricane Isabel would turn from the coast. He asked God to put a "wall of protection'' around Virginia Beach and the East Coast.

Feasting Woodpeckers

hurrican isabel pileated woodpecker florida
Hurricane Isabel brought devastation to many, but it brought a feast of ants for the woodpeckers.

I was thrilled just to see our small group of pileated woodpeckers had returned this past weekend. They hung around all last year, eating carpenter ants out of the many blacklocust trees broken by Hurricane Isabel the previous autumn, but I had not seen them all winter.

Who knew...

PEPCO Tree Trimming Controversy

hurricane power lines down
It's hard to balance all interests in the ongoing post-Isabel clean-up.

Since Hurricane Isabel, I have felt like one hand clapping in saying: It s the trees, stupid! As People s Counsel and a D.C. resident, I align myself with those respecting Mother Nature s serendipity and furious storms and enjoy the serenity of a canopy of beautiful, healthy trees. Yet, I also demand safe, adequate and reliable electric service.

As a People s Counsel living in a post-Hurricane Isabel world, I applaud Pepco s timely efforts to manage and maintain vegetation. Yet, I know Pepco s tree trimming tactics have been viewed as overly aggressive, recently drawing sharp criticism. Pepco’s actions have, however, also drawn praise. Some residents believe Pepco s vegetation management seems but a small price to pay to avoid the scourge of natural disasters or emergencies like Hurricane Isabel.

Crooked Bridge Source Of Safety Debate

Hurricane Isabel crooked bridge needs repair
Costs of Hurricane Isabel include repairing key infrastructure like the Crooked Bridge.

A Department of Interior survey was finished on the bridge in 1965. According to an inspection of the bridge done in December 2003 by Piedmont Bridge Inspection Service of Rapidan, it determined the condition of the bridge is "poor." Samuels said the inspection was done shortly after Hurricane Isabel. The company made several recommendations that Samuels said are being addressed. The company noted that large debris, decayed timber, corrosion and loose deck bolts as some of the problems with the bridge. The key inspector was James Lillard. The inspector noted that although the piers are misaligned, they seem stable. He recommended safety inspections for the bridge as often as possible. Samuels said inspections are done annually and one is expected to be conducted soon. She said homeowners have been investigating several plans, such as rebuilding the top and even replacing it.

Such crews have become almost business as usual, though, as coastal Poquoson labors to recover from its $100 million devastation by Hurricane Isabel with lots -- and lots-- of volunteer help.

Understanding Resources Needed After a Disaster

Hurricane Isabel recovery assessment
Learning from the Hurricane Isabel recovery, the Board of Trade is designing better disaster recovery plans.

Needs were developed through interviews with area emergency services managers and by looking at reports of disasters such as the 2001 jetliner attacks and Hurricane Isabel, Cunningham said. The Board of Trade will work with local public managers to keep the list current and make sure the appropriate emergency centers get the aid, she said.

Hiking Hurricane Sisters

hurricane isabel flooding
These intrepid hikers sat out Hurricane Isabel one year and Hurricane Frances the next. But they finally got to hike!
Yes, for this hike we have been christened with new trail names by Lois and Earl Arnold, owners and operators of the Dutch Haas B&B. We stayed at their Bed & Breakfast last year to wait out Hurricane Isabel and we arrived this year with Hurricane Frances, so now we are known as the Hurricane Sisters, Spirit/Frances and Smasher/Isabel! Beth and I arrived at the Dutch Haas after both of us drove through the driving rains of Hurricane Frances most of the day. We were to begin our hiking journey on the 8th of Sept. but decided to wait out the torrential downpours, high winds and downed trees as the remnants of Hurricane Frances passed through.

Businesses Unhappy With Conectiv

Hurricane Isabel overwash in delaware
Hurricanes have made it difficult to provide power, but Conectiv ranks near the bottom of the pack for power companies.

Conectiv has done poorly in the annual J.D. Power survey for the last several years, ranking below the national average and low when compared to East Coast utilities.

For the past two years, the companies have had to deal with widespread blackouts caused by hurricanes. The current ranking may have been influenced by those events, said Conklin.

In response to the worst blackout in company history, state regulators ordered Conectiv last year to change the way it responds to massive power outages. That blackout in September 2003, a result of Hurricane Isabel, knocked out power to 109,000 customers for up to a week.

Anger at the company built up as the blackout dragged on and customers were not given any information about when their power would be restored, a Conectiv policy that has since been reversed.

Colonial Beach Set to Open Later This Year

Hurricane Isabel damage near frederickburg
Colonial Beach landmark plans to open nearly 2 years after Hurricane Isabel.

It's been a long process of permitting, planning and waiting, but Riverboat-on-the-Potomac owner Penny Flanagan hopes visitors will be able to return to the Colonial Beach landmark by the end of November.

"We're finally getting excited about it now," Flanagan said this week.

The Riverboat, a pier off the Potomac shore in Colonial Beach, housed a restaurant, arcade, liquor store and Maryland off-track betting parlor until Hurricane Isabel wrecked it in September 2003.

Hurricane Isabel did great road damage in Virginia.

The federal government will pay for just under 30 (m) million dollars of the damage that Hurricane Isabel did to Virginia roads.

The storm in September 2003 caused more than 70 (m) million in damage to Virginia's road system.

The U-S Department of Transportation provides emergency help to pay for repairs to eligible highways seriously damaged by natural disasters.

Blogs Help with Hurricanes

Hurricane Isabel

Blogs are a great way for people to give local information about hurricanes. Here's a blog from when Hurricane Isabel travelled north towards Canada.

It's just after 7:00 AM and what's left of Hurricane Isabel is centered right about where I am here in Southwestern Ontario.

We're getting a heavy downpour and moderate wind. It looks like the power of the storm has diminished and what we're experiencing is no worse than other storms this year. By the looks of the radar image, though, we're in for quite a few more hours of rain.
